Northland Expressway to Revolutionize Road Travel
The proposed Northland Expressway is set to transform road travel between Whangārei and Auckland, with estimated benefits of $18 billion.
Labour Day traffic demonstrated the potential reduction in travel times with the new corridor. The 100km expressway will connect Auckland's Warkworth to central Whangārei, comprising three Roads of National Significance.
- Work on the first part, from Warkworth to Te Hana, is scheduled to start in late 2026.
- The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) board has approved the investment case for the other two parts: Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway and Port Marsden Highway to Whangārei.
The benefits are huge
The Government has allocated $187 million for design, consenting, route protection, and property acquisition along the 75km stretch, prioritizing the Brynderwyn Hills alternative.
