WWI Soldiers' Messages Found After 109 Years in Australia
Letters from soldiers en route to France, over a century old, offer a poignant glimpse into their journey, and help unite their families.
The Brown family found a bottle containing the letters on October 9, near Esperance in Western Australia. Deb Brown's husband Peter and daughter Felicity made the discovery during a quad bike expedition to clear the beach of rubbish.
"We do a lot of cleaning up on our beaches and so would never go past a piece of rubbish. So this little bottle was lying there waiting to be picked up,"
said Deb Brown. The letters, written in pencil by Privates Malcolm Neville, 27, and William Harley, 37, were dated August 15, 1916.
