Strong Quake Hits Hokkaido, Authorities Urge Vigilance
A strong earthquake struck eastern areas of Hokkaido Prefecture on Saturday, prompting warnings of potential future quakes.
The quake, with a magnitude of 5.8, reached a lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in the city of Nemuro.
- Occurred at 1:40 a.m. at a depth of about 40 kilometers off the southeastern coast of the Nemuro Peninsula.
- No tsunami threat was reported.
People in affected areas should remain alert for more temblors measuring up to a lower 5 for about a week.
The earthquake occurred at the boundary of two plates, where an ocean plate is subducting beneath a land plate, according to the Meteorological Agency.
