ELMONT, NY -- Matthew Schaefer, the 2025 first-overall pick, scored his first NHL goal during the New York Islanders' home opener against the Washington Capitals.
The goal occurred at 16:41 of the third period, with the Islanders on a power play and trailing 4-1. After a scramble, Schaefer scored, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery challenged for a hand pass, but the goal stood after a review.
