Vaccine skepticism is putting everybody at greater risk, with many worried about health risks from a proven, decades-old vaccine.
In 1998, a paper published in The Lancet linked the MMR vaccine to autism in children. However, the research was flawed, and the primary author had multiple conflicts of interest.
The Lancet formally retracted the paper in 2010, but the damage had been done.
The United States was also affected by this misinformation, with vaccination rates falling and measles outbreaks increasing over time.
Average measles cases per year were around 70, with the worst year being 140 cases in 2008.
Author's summary: Vaccine skepticism poses a significant risk.
