Seen & Heard: The Seneca Chief on Pier 26

The historic boat Seneca Chief was spotted on Pier 26, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal.

The boat, which carried Governor DeWitt Clinton to the inauguration of the Erie Canal in 1825, has a significant name:

a reference to the Indigenous nation that, together with the rest of the Haudenosaunee (or Iroquois) Confederacy, had dominated western and central New York for centuries.

Another boat, called Noah’s Ark, was also part of the procession, carrying members of the tribe, as well as eagles, deer, and a bear, as part of a dehumanizing sideshow.
