Hurricane Melissa Hits Portland, Jamaica

Due to the early impact of Hurricane Melissa, 52 out of 74 shelters in Portland have been opened, housing 295 occupants.

Several roads, including Cascade and Birnamwood in the Buff Bay Valley and Bellevue in the Rio Grande Valley, were blocked by landslides on Sunday but were later cleared. Additionally, a fallen tree and a utility pole blocked Sommers Lane in Port Antonio.

High waves and wind in the Manchioneal area prompted some residents to seek shelter at the Manchioneal Primary School. As of late Monday evening, the breakdown of people in shelters in the parish was as follows:

Some areas, including Islington, Boston, Fairy Hill, and a section of Norwich Heights, are experiencing power outages.
