The long-delayed Edinburgh concert hall project is finally moving forward after the Scottish Government provided a £20m rescue package.
The project, which was first granted planning permission over six years ago, had been stalled due to rising costs. Initially estimated at £45m by architects Chipperfield and Reiach & Hall, the costs had ballooned, causing original contractor Sir Robert McAlpine to exit the project last spring.
Balfour Beatty has been brought in under an early contractor involvement agreement to oversee the construction of the concert hall, which will be located behind St Andrew Square in the city centre.
The landmark venue will provide a permanent home for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and serve as a major base for the Edinburgh International Festival, commissioned by IMPACT Scotland.
The deal was sealed after the Scottish Government stepped in with a £20m rescue package for the project.
