New Film Explores History and Conservation at Vermejo Reserve

A new documentary film, "Preserved," delves into the history and conservation work at Ted Turner's Vermejo Reserve, located west of Raton, New Mexico.

The Vermejo Reserve spans nearly 560,000 acres of wilderness, ranchland, and former coal mines across Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Media mogul Ted Turner purchased the reserve in 1996.

"What's really unique is how many ecosystems it crosses," said Lance Bernal, the reserve's natural resources manager. "It starts down in the short grass prairie at about 6,000 feet in elevation and goes all the way up to alpine, above timber line, close to 13,000 feet."

The reserve's diverse landscape makes it an ideal location for conservation efforts. Author's summary: New film explores Vermejo Reserve's history.
