Amazon Web Services Issues Cause Canvas Outage
Canvas, the platform used by Emory University to facilitate its classes, is experiencing a full outage due to Amazon Web Services (AWS) issues.
According to Canvas' status website, the outage has been ongoing since early morning, affecting half of all North American higher education institutions that use its services.
- Downdetector, a website outage tracking platform, has reported around 5,000 complaints per hour, significantly higher than the usual 5-10 complaints per hour.
- Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, first reported issues at 3:04 a.m. EST and attributed the outage to AWS, causing problems with the login service and submission system.
Users are currently unable to sign in to view courses or submit their work due to the outage.
Canvas reports that half of all North American higher education institutions use its services and are impacted by the outage.
