A 17-mile stretch of the I-5 freeway in Southern California was shut down on Saturday due to a military event involving live ammunition at Camp Pendleton, in celebration of the U.S. Marine Corps 250th anniversary.
The closure, which impacted both sides of the freeway from Harbor Drive in Oceanside to Basilone Road near San Onofre, began at 11 a.m. and caused heavy traffic backups just minutes after taking effect.
The military event will involve "live ammunition being discharged by the federal government over the freeway," according to the CHP.
Video footage provided by California officials showed live munitions being fired near the freeway on Friday, in an apparent practice run. The freeway has since reopened on Saturday afternoon.
